And I never knew that I'm sixty four and I never knew that. And did you know that grandpa, our grandfather was part of this, you know, and if he didn't survive, we wouldn't be here. We're here. Mardonia Galeana prepares salsa at her home in San Jose, Calif., on Oct. 7, 2021. In the early 1990s, Galeana started an informal business selling home-cooked meals and offered them at a reduced price to the immigrant community in their neighborhood. Her clientele grew, and for several nights a week, men crowded into their apartment, sharing laughs and hardships."For those men, the camaraderie of sitting around Abuela’s table helped make being in this country feel less lonely," said her grandson Yosimar Reyes.
